SAILING
On Friday the 29th of November the Upper South Y9 students had the opportunity to improve on their sailing skills. We all met at the Nelson Yacht Club where the instructors showed them how to set up their yachts. The instructors explained some basic sailing skills and sail settings. The students then boarded their Topaz class yachts in groups of 3-4 and were towed out into the bay by the rescue boats.
Fortunately light winds blew during the morning session and the students quickly got to grips with tacking, jibing, sailing upwind, down wind and reaching. Parents and staff, with some students, were on the rescue boats and the larger 16ft yacht.
After lunch the wind picked up making sailing a lot more exciting. The yachts were racing across the water and the students showed great skill in handling the boats. Some of the yachts capsized causing screams of laughter but the students were very skilled at righting the boats very quickly.
By the end of the day it was clear that the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I would like to thank all the parents and teachers who accompanied the students. I big thank you to Mr Rogers who organised this wonderful day.

KAYAKING DOWN THE PELORUS

The Nelson Year 7/8s participated in an On-Site Science Fair. Students used the Scientific Method to answer a Science Inquiry Question. Then they had to present their findings. Thank you to Mr Brooks and Mrs James who came and judged our Science Fair.

Enjoy the photos.
To celebrate the end of the school year the Year 3 – 6 Nelson children had a Water Fun day on the last Friday of term. The two bouncy castles, including the Screamer Slide, were hugely popular, and the children also had a thirty metre long water slide to skid along, courtesy of TM Covers, Nelson. There was lots of water action with Super Soakers and Water Blasters battling it out. To cool off, there were ice blocks, then everyone settled down to a pizza and hot chip lunch while rounding off a very busy, exciting day watching the movie War Horse.
