Athletics Day Info & Programme for the Day
The Upper South Athletics event is one week away.
The event is again at Saxton Stadium, below are some helpful hints and information about the day:
- Tyler McLean is again running the event website uppersouth.events. This holds all the information about the day as well as being updated on the day with results as they come in.
- We are still short of volunteers to help with running the events. Please add your name and email to the smartsheet to let us know if you can help.
- Nelson students are expected to be at school for 8.40am as normal in their school PE kit (house tops). Please help your son/daughter ensure they have the correct school uniform for this day. Students will be shuttled across to the stadium
- Marlborough and West Coast students should arrive at the stadium by 9.35am
- Events start with the 100m heats at 10am followed by the finals.
- If students are using spikes to run in there are expected to use starting blocks to protect the track
- Please keep an eye on the weather forecast and bring sunscreen and hats or jackets and blankets.
- The track area is surrounded by a fence it is vitally important for our health and safety management that only staff, volunteers supporting the field events and students who have to compete go inside the barrier. Please ensure all family, friends and siblings remain outside the barrier. You can walk around the barrier and get a good view of your child competing in their track or field events.
- Students have now confirmed their event selection. This event is about participating and being part of their House as well as a chance to excel and reach their potential. Please celebrate everyones’ performances so they enjoy the day to the fullest.

Birthday Cake baking with Gianni
Last week it was Gianni’s turn for Birthday baking in Greymouth. We made a chocolate cake. He was very proud and watched it eagerly while it was baking in the oven. He enjoyed icing it at the end and sharing it with all his friends.

Upper South Year 7/8 Beach Day
Upper South Year 7/8s had a blast learning about Life Saving and Beach Education! We learnt 5 rules to keep us safe at the Beach. Our learning is presented in a poster. Outstanding posters are Madison, Montana, Tauri, Danelle, Imogen, Yves and April. Well done to Boston who was selected for "Student of the Day" from our lifeguards. A big thank you to all parent helpers including Burkley, Arthur and Jamie. A great day! Thanks Hero Lifeguards! Upper South Year 7/8s had a blast learning about Life Saving and Beach Education! Y3/6 Beach Day at Rabbit Island

Year 3-4 students had a wonderful time learning about how to stay safe in the surf and also how to be sunsmart. They enjoyed a variety of learning activities at school, on the beach and in the water.
We wrote instructions for how to stay safe in the surf. This is what Maeva and Tesori wrote:
The Blenheim students have had a great start to 2020. We welcomed four new Y3 students. The senior students quickly adjusted to their new timetable. New furniture has been purchased for the Learning Centre and will be set up soon. On Wednesday 4th March all the Y9-13 students travelled to Murchison for a campus get together as well as games of soccer, touch, volleyball and basketball. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students.
The senior students were shouted a morning tea in acknowledgement of their good behaviour at school and sportsmanship shown on the field. Some photos below.

West Coast Garden Investigation Project
The West Coast Year 10s have been gardening as part of their ‘Garden Investigation Project’ for Science. The students have been experimenting with different fertilizers and planting such things as carrots, flowers and thyme.
Here is Tansi Hill planting the carrots in the garden that the West Coast students have prepared for this project.
Here is a good example of our Self Directed Learners from Greymouth all hard at work. Well done!
