Kia ora whanau I hope that you are all settling back into life routines that existed before COVID 19.
Monday 18 May was a most exciting return to school for students and staff. Students arriving, meeting friends, and renewing acquaintances with their classmates was electric. Staff were also out and about amongst the students as they gathered, there was a true sense of joy in the air.
These Y7-13 started the day off with some team building games.
I have been absolutely impressed with the positivity and energy of students throughout the last two weeks as they have settled into physical activities and embraced the new hygiene routines needed at this time.
The success of student learning through online teaching can be attributed to the strong commitment from staff, students and parents. Throughout the COVID 19 Alert Levels, many frontline workers have been celebrated and thanked for their dedication and ongoing service in our communities. The thousands of frontline workers throughout Aotearoa have made great sacrifices to maintain essential services and to care for those who are sick or vulnerable. It is truly a blessing that we have people of such service and compassion in our communities. We do not have to go too far to recognise within our own OSG community the many parents, caregivers and students who served as essential workers throughout this time, thank you to all.

Although our lives are beginning (in some ways) to look more like they used to, remember that it is still okay to still be suffering the effects of isolation and/or becoming part of the community again. For some the transition has been simple, for others extremely difficult. Everything is an okay response. It is now more important than ever to practice self-care and be kind to yourself as well as others. I have attached an awesome graphic that has some great tips for how you can be kind to yourself.
During our time working from home, the Blenheim Year 3-6s began creating board games to acknowledge the heroes of Covid-19. They have continued working on these back in the classroom and they are nearly finished. The students are looking forward to playing these once they are completed.
Upper South Y7/8s ANZAC Hero Stories
During Lockdown, we learnt about Anzac Heroes to link with our Inquiry Question: How might I ignite the Hero within? Our assignment was to “tell an Anzac Hero story” and then relate the story to how I can ignite my heroism…
Here are examples of Anzac Hero Stories from: Tamar, Madison, Oregon, April and Pebble.
Our Inquiry question is: How might we investigate what the world cannot work without? We are exploring the Sun and Photosynthesis.
Here is our art work relating to the wellknown myth and legend, Maui and the Sun.
Here are examples of our photosynthesis investigations which also lead into learning about the water cycle.
Now, we are exploring solar energy and we have created solar ovens to cook a mini pizza. We have yet to test them out!
Soon, we will be investigating our own questions and Inquiry into what the world cannot do without and we will be having a Science Fair. Watch this space!
West Coast Greymouth and Westport Y3-6 students had a great deal of fun exploring bubble making while they were locked down and were tasked with drawing what was part of their “bubble”.
