Head Start
- Head Start is the OSG programme to
- Maintain academic rigour in Years 3 – 11 in the last five weeks of Term 4 after the senior secondary students leave to write their NCEA exams.
- Provide an opportunity for students to get to know their 2024 teachers.
- Teach the skills and processes required in the next level of learning with a focus on goal setting, planning and learning routines.
- Begin students’ learning for the next level of learning five weeks early.
Over the last two week, the Y4-11s students have done extremely well and I am very impressed on their academic focus.
Campus Culture
Our focus points for the next five weeks, stemming from the recent Global CA meeting in Sydney.
Uniform
Uniform would be one of our areas we can improve. This is both being in the correct uniform, as well as wearing our uniform with pride. Neat, tidy and tucked in.
Student Persona
Attendance
In line with our Campus Culture, not one of the five foci, however just as important.
Be on time. School starts at 8:40am. ALL students should be at school by 8:30am. If students are not in class by 8:40am, this impacts everyone in that class.
If your child is going to be absent or late for school, please do one of the following before 8.30am:
- Use the Edge App to notify the school of your child’s absence -
For instructions on downloading and using the Edge app, click here
- Email the School Office Administrator
- Phone in to the Office Administrator to record your child’s absence.
NCEA Examinations
Wishing our Year 11-13 students all the best as they tackle their External NCEA examinations. “STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE”
Year 9 Excursion - Natural Flames Murchison
Tuesday's forecast was looking a little dicey but with the plucky Year 9s in tow from West Coast, Marlborough and Nelson, we all met up in Murchison to go and experience the Natural Flames up the Blackwater valley.
After driving through the farm and arriving at the fence line we donned our jackets and headed off up the valley, a beautiful example of South Island beech forest. We learned of the discovery of gas and oil up this valley in the 1920's and the equipment that was sent from Argentina to drill up to 3km underground! Oil and gas was discovered but not enough to warrant a large scale operation. Once we had hiked through the bush for an hour or so and had some interesting botanical lessons, had a taste of the honey dew on the beech trees and clambered over many tree roots we came to the site where the methane gas comes out through the ground! Steve our guide cooked us delicious versions of s'mores, hot chocolate and pancakes with honey and cream, all over the natural flames emerging from the ground!
Even though the rain came and went, we all had a wonderful adventure in a place not many people can experience.

On 9 November, the Nelson Primary School had approximately a hundred visitors. One of them was a lady called Ariana from Bunnings, the rest were a bunch of tiger worms! Ms Williamson and Mrs Idle have been doing an amazing job setting up our garden beds. We are now growing potatoes, broad beans, lettuce, broccoli, kale, and various varieties of tomatoes. Our goal is to be a more sustainable school and feed our community from our gardens.
We currently recycle our food scraps in a bucket that is donated to Mrs Jacobs’ pig ‘Maggie’. Our next step was we wanted to extend our recycling program to create ‘food’ for our gardens. Ms. Williamson approached Bunnings to see what they could do to help us. Bunnings very kindly donated all the supplies for us to construct and look after a worm farm. We plan to share Maggie’s food scraps with the worms.
The children enjoyed building the worm farm and learning about how a worm farm works. A highlight was watching the worms wriggling around and then ‘tucking them in’ under the blanket.
Now we just need to come up with 99 names for our new worm friends!
